PEACE CAMP PARENT HANDBOOK
Introduction
The Peace Camp at Gwynedd Friends evolved from a community effort to develop a summer camp experience for elementary school age children. The camp’s emphasis is on peacemaking, conflict resolution, self-expression, teamwork, and respect for all people and the world around us.
The Peace Camp at Gwynedd Friends seeks to provide children with the tools they need to understand conflict, express emotions, communicate openly and honestly, understand different perspectives, celebrate differences, form creative solutions, and cooperate - all while having fun! These skills are designed to empower children to foster peaceful situations at home, at school with other students, and in the larger context of the world.
Considering the needs of working families, the Peace Camp at Gwynedd Friends is scheduled at a time in August when many regional camps are not operating and school has not yet begun. We try to keep costs low, and we offer scholarships in order to reach the widest possible cross section of our community.
The camp is staffed by experienced educators and has a high Teacher/child ratio.
We also employ qualified college students as Counselors and have a Counselor-In-Training program for high school youth.
The goal of the Peace Camp at Gwynedd Friends is to provide a day camp experience in keeping with Friends’ values and educational practices. To accomplish this we are committed to activities that encourage:
• Development of peacemaking and communication skills in fun, interactive activities
• Strengthening of constructive leadership skills
• Care of nature and community
• Creativity
• Reflection
• Group support (becoming a caring group member)

Camper Attendance and Pick Up
Peace Camp begins at 9am and ends at 3pm. Monday-Friday. Please send a note to the camp director for Extended Day, doctor’s appointments, and special arrangements. If your child will be arriving late, absent, or picked up by an adult other than the designated adult(s), please contact the camp director at 267-664-3295.
________________________________________
Extended Day
The Extended Day Program is available to children attending the Peace Camp at Gwynedd Friends. It is open from 3:00 pm to 5:00pm and costs $20 per day, or $80 for the week. (The scholarship program does not generally cover Extended Day, but arrangements can be made on a case-by-case basis). Pre-program hours begin at 8:30am and are available free of charge. Please notify the camp director at 267-664-3295 which days your child will arrive before 9:00am and/or stay after 3:00pm and until what time.
________________________________________
Medications
Campers are not to take or carry any type of medication (over the counter or prescription) without the camp’s knowledge. All medications must be checked in with the camp teachers. The camp must be informed of all medications to be taken during the day. The camp may dispense no medication of its own without direct parental approval.
________________________________________
Health and Safety
The health and safety of the children is our highest priority. Maintaining a healthy and safe environment takes precedence over any activity. Parents will be contacted in the event of a concerning injury. Please have your child put on SUNSCREEN before coming to camp in the morning, and send sunscreen for us to keep at camp for your child to use during the day.
________________________________________
Lunch and Snacks
Please send your child to camp with a healthy lunch, including a beverage. Please do not send any candy, gum or soda, or food that requires heating. Be sure to include a cold pack if needed.
The camp will provide snacks at appropriate times.
________________________________________
Care of Rooms
Campers will be encouraged to accept responsibility for the care, cleanliness, and order of their rooms. Though maintenance people will supplement our efforts, staff members are responsible for the general tidiness, cleanliness, and good order of their areas of the camp. We encourage the children’s’ participation in these endeavors.
________________________________________
Smoking
Smoking is not permitted in the buildings or on the grounds of Gwynedd Friends Meeting out of concern for the health and safety of campers and staff. This policy protects all from the dangers of passive smoking and protects the physical plant from the danger of fire. It also removes the educational drawbacks connected with having camper role models smoking at camp.
________________________________________
Behavior Policy
Our aim is to have a meaningful camp experience for all participants, and accommodate the needs of all campers. However, if problem behavior is seen, we will first address the behavior and clearly state our expectations with the camper. If the behavior continues, contact will be made with parents/guardians to inform them of the situation. Should the behavior interfere with the emotional or physical safety of the Peace Camp community, the Peace Camp at Gwynedd Friends reserves the right to dismiss the camper from the remainder of camp, with no refund given.
"I have read the Peace Camp Parent Handbook and agree to its policies and procedures."
